“This is the best of the best…”
This is the best of the best. The teachers really care about their students. Our kids have taken guitar, piano, and voice lessons through the school of music and we have been happy with all of their lessons. We have one daughter who has gone on to sing in bands and play guitar through the school of music as well. There are many opportunities to grow as a musician here. We are grateful for the lesson our daughters have learned.
“I like that he asks me what songs I want to learn…”
I have been taking guitar lessons from Chris Shahin for 2 years. I started out in the group classes through the Campbell Community Center. I found his teaching style and approach very straight forward and easy to pick up. I don’t have much innate musical talent so a patient teacher was a must. I then switched to private lessons and have really enjoyed it. I like that he asks me what songs I want to learn instead of requiring songs that he picked. He seems to know every song and style so he is never stumped. I highly recommend Chris Shahin and SJG School of Music.
“Personable and Engaging”
Chris, who I think is the owner, lead guitar instructor is a good guy! The school is organized and busy with a lot of children studying and practicing music at all different levels. Chris teaches my daughter guitar and is personable and engaging. My 11 year old is pleased and will continue taking lessons with Chris. My son takes drum lessons from Jemal who is equally as desirable but in a different way. Dry sense of humor I hear through the office walls with my son and engaging in a playful way with him as well. My son enjoys drumming with Jemal and we will continue the lessons here with him as well. The Campbell Community Center, where they are located is a really nice, vintage restored high school – cozy and convenient for us. Thanks guys!
“The most effective and fun piano teacher that I have had.”
I have been learning jazz piano from Joey Trombly at SJG School of Music.
I have had several teachers before, but Joey has been hands down the most effective and fun piano teacher that I have had. I am learning jazz piano from him and in a little over a year I have gone from rather limited and frankly awful robotic skills to being able to sit in front of The Jazz Real Book type chord sheets and on the fly do one and two handed chord voicings. That in itself has been a satisfying joy for me. I am now learning how to improvise by identifying tonal areas over chord changes and improvise lines over them using different scales and approaches (keys, modes, etc.)
The thing with Joey is that he seems to effortlessly know exactly what to focus on at every lesson so that practice stays fun and absolutely not a chore, and without building bad habits or taking shortcuts. In that way Joey is a very gifted natural teacher. I have had four other piano teachers before Joey, in classical and jazz/pop, but every time I eventually got bored with practicing and eventually stopped altogether. Not so with Joey. Something in the way he looks at your playing and then finds something to work on next that keeps piano playing fun and fresh but at the same time will improve technique and musicianship, and before you know it you are doing things comfortably that you did not imagine you could learn in such a short amount of time.
As an adult with with a demanding day job I had more or less given up on learning piano after years of frustration, but thankfully Joey changed that for me and I am grateful for that. I hope that others will find the same joy that I have found in learning to play an instrument with Joey at SJG.
“Jemal inspired us so much that my other son and I signed up music classes at the same school as well!”
My son has been a student of Jemal Ramirez at SJG School of Music for the past several years. Jemal has a unique way of adapting to the student’s way of learning. He makes the lessons more fun, enjoyable and more importantly, effective. Even when my son is sick, he pretends he isn’t only so I will take him to the drums class. Jemal is a great teacher!
Jemal inspired us so much that my other son and I signed up music classes at the same school as well!
“He teaches his students well from beginners to experienced drummers.”
Jemal Ramirez is a great drum teacher with years of experiencing playing percussion and teaching. He teaches his students well from beginners to experienced drummers. I have been attending his drum classes at SJG for three years and I have greatly enjoyed his teaching style. Jemal uses music in his lesson to apply the different drum drills and beats to music by professional artists. He is a very fun teacher and really enjoys teaching. He won’t stop teaching you until you master a certain subject which can turn you into a great musician. SJG is a well-established organization to help aspiring musicians to discover their voice and accomplish great things. I highly recommend Jemal Ramirez and the SJG School of Music.
“…its exciting to hear him practicing”
Jemal Ramirez is a great drum teacher. My son has been learning with him for over a year and its exciting to hear him practicing, as well as introducing to him music that he might not otherwise listen too.
“Now, my son frequently plays of his own desire to get better.”
Jemal Ramirez has been teaching my son how to play drums at the SJG School of Music for almost four years. I love how Jemal not only teaches him how to play, but also how to have a greater appreciation for the history of music. His passion for music really shines through whenever my son tells us something about the influence of a certain band or person on drumming and music in general.
Of course, his ability to teach drumming is amazing. When my son was learning piano, it was always a chore to get him to play. Now, my son frequently plays of his own desire to get better. And get better he has. From having no drum experience, my son now freely plays various styles of drumming.
“I am so thankful to find such an awesome teacher.”
My son has been taking drum lesson with Jemal Ramirez for 7 years since he was 5 years old. Jemal is the most dedicated , compassionate and knowledgeable music teacher that I’ve ever met. Jemal introduced my son to the percussion world. Not only he is able to get my son interested in learning and practicing, but also provide him opportunity to play different instruments such as marimba, timpani and vibraphone. It is extremely helpful for his school band practice in middle school. I am so thankful to find such an awesome teacher.
“I’m very lucky I found Chris Shahin he brought music back in my life with the love I once had as a child.”
My family has been students of Chris Shahin even before SJG. He’s is truly an amazing guitar teacher and just a wonderful person. I brought both my boys to SJG, one for guitar and the other for drums, both thrived in the learning environment they provide. They are now 25 and 29 and still enjoy playing.
I went to Chris as well 12 years ago because I played as a kid and wanted to be involved in music with the boys again. It was so great, because Chris can teach any skill level and adjusts his teaching to the students’ needs which for me was awesome because I just wanted to play again for fun and wanted the boys to learn music the correct way, plus still have fun. All of us looked forward to going every week and couldn’t wait to learn with him. It became a place for me as an adult to have the hobby I dreamed of as a child.
So life happen and stopped for several years––college & marriage for the kids. I’m in my mid 50’s I lost part of my memory due to an accident and started back again August of 2013 over a year now again and I can’t wait to go play, I feel I’ve improved so much and so happy Chris is who he is, he made it so cool to go back and relearn all that I’ve lost. He has more patience than anyone I’ve ever met. I’m very lucky I found Chris Shahin he brought music back in my life with the love I once had as a child. I truly believe as long as his doors are open I will continue my lessons and playing guitar for the rest of my life.
I recommend Chris if you’re a little older who use to play and just want to play again without going back to step 1 of Mel Bay or if you never played at all. Plus since going I purchased a few new guitars so I can’t stop now lol
If you have a child or grandchild who you wants to start from the beginning and have fun while they learn, he is truly the best teacher I could have ever had. 5 stars is not enough.
Check them out, I also saw they have a brand new Piano and the teacher has been there from the start and everyone I’ve spoke to about him, reviews are the same 5 stars
San Jose Guitar, is the place for music.
“Chris and all the instructors are true professionals.”
We had the good fortune to be recommended by a neighbor to Chris and SJG School of Music. Our son began private guitar lessons with Chris when he was 6-years old and he is now almost 15. Chris and all the instructors are true professionals and clearly have a love and passion for music and teaching their art to others. We are so lucky to be part of this school. I believe guitar playing and the love and appreciation for music will always be a foundational part of our son and who he is.
“The school organizes regular performances…”
We have had a wonderful experience with Chris Shahin and the SJG for over 7 yrs now. We have two boys who play Jazz guitar. They have both greatly benefited from the instruction and guidance they got from Chris. In addition to the technical skills, he has a gentle and friendly style that really encourages kids to enjoy and explore the music. The school also organizes regular performances which has given them a chance to grow in confidence and the ability to play with other musicians (teachers as well as other local artists). We would definitely recommend Chris and his school.
“…SJG School of Music also gives students opportunities to connect with the community…”
I am happy to recommend Joey Trombly and SJG School of Music. My son has been taking piano lessons with Joey for over five years and we have enjoyed watching his talent progress and his love for music grow. Joey is a patient and encouraging teacher – he has supported teaching lessons with the music my son selects from personal preferences, while at the same time Joey keeps the focus on the fundamentals needed for my son’s skill level. SJG School of Music also gives students opportunities to connect with the community and share their love of music by supporting annual school concerts and other small band performances.
“He lets my son play the music that keeps him interested…”
My son started taking piano lessons w/Joey Trombly last spring, and I am AMAZED at his progress. Joey is patient, and very encouraging. He lets my son play the music that keeps him interested and excited about playing. I love hearing the two of them play duets. SJG School of Music was the best decision I could have made for my budding musician.
“He is patient and good with kids…”
I have 2 kids who have been taking Piano lessons with Joey Trombly of SJG school of Music for many years. Both are now teenagers and still love playing and working with him. He is patient and good with kids and has them play all types, jazz, blues, pop, classical. They like that as they got older he is letting them select the music to keep them interested. My daughter has also played piano with one of the rock band groups that Chris, the owner, works with and loved learning to interact and play with the other band members.
“His knowledge of music is really extensive!”
I’ve been a student of Chris Shahin at SJG school of Music for over three years. He’s an amazing teacher and guitarist! I was looking for someone that knew fingerstyle specifically, and I had a really tough time! I had 3 or 4 teachers until I met Chris.
He knows blues, jazz, rock, pop, swing, etc… And more importantly, he’s very patient and thorough. His knowledge of music is really extensive! I’ve been so impressed by Chris that we asked him to play at our wedding. It was an honor to have him there and he played beautifully!
If you’re a beginner or if you haven’t picked up the guitar in a while and need to brush up, or if you have a child that’s interested in music, Chris Shahin at SJG school of Music should be your first and last music teacher! Five out of five stars!
“Thank you for what you have taught me about guitar…”
Thank you for what you have taught me about guitar playing. You have given me a base to build on, and I will enjoy practicing what you have taught. Looking forward to taking more lessons from you again in the future.
“…brings fun in teaching…”
I think you are a great teacher who brings fun in teaching. I really enjoyed my classes with you.
“…I looked forward to class each week…”
Chris is an excellent teacher, I looked forward to class each week. I learned more in his class than I had learned in months of trying to teach myself. Very enjoyable, comfortable atmosphere, wide range of material (Beethoven, Beatles, Blues, Journey, John Mayer), and he makes it feel easy.
“…given Ryan a great appreciation for different genres of music and guitarists…”
Our son, Ryan has been receiving private guitar lessons at SJG Music School for nearly 10 years! Ryan not only looks forward to each weekly lesson but also thoroughly enjoys being involved in the Rock Workshops. Over the years, Ryan has learned a variety of songs and techniques not only on the guitar but the electric bass. Chris Shahin has also given Ryan a great appreciation for different genres of music and guitarists. When Ryan goes off to college next year he will likely have to leave his Wednesday night lessons behind but he will take with him amazing memories and a talent that will bring him joy his entire lifetime – priceless!
“…something for everyone at SJG, check them out!”
We were lucky to come across Chris Shahin and SJG in ’09. We could not be happier. Our oldest rekindled her interest in the piano with Joey Trombly. Joey is enthusiastic and encouraging while he helps her explore the music she enjoys. The Rockband Workshops where she plays keyboard have also been a fun way for her to learn to play with and for others. Bill Cefalu has provided a great launchpad for our youngest’s guitar journey. She enjoys Bill’s song selections on both the acoustic and electric guitar. Chris’ Guitar Ensemble not only has me playing again but also provides an opportunity to play out in the Campbell community. There is truly something for everyone at SJG, check them out!
“… developing children’s inherent love for music …”
SJG is all about developing children’s inherent love for music, and then building their confidence for performance using settings that range from very comfortable for beginners, to large public venues for more advanced students. The expectations are high, and no SJG student will escape learning music fundamentals, but the approach works. SJG is also unique in its ability to maintain momentum and enthusiasm in its students. Chris and his staff boredom by making sure that Stairway to Heaven and Santana follows Für Elise and Fernando Sor. SJG has inspired a passion for music in our children and many others, that will last a lifetime.
“…A true win-win!”
Your Group Lessons Program is a hit! For many years, parents at our school have been asking for a high-quality, on-site after-school music program. Your Group Lessons Program is a perfect fit for our school, as evidenced by the popularity during the first session. Your teachers have been professional and respectful of the facilities. Your teachers are professional, skilled, and caring, and their teaching method aligns directly with our child-centered philosophy. The program has been well attended and the students are enthusiastic about learning to play music. A true win-win!
